- Clermont-Ferrand was founded in the 17th century from the union of Clermont, a town of the Bishops, and Montferrand, the town of the Counts of Auvergne. Clermont-Ferrand is spread out at the foot of the chain of eighty volcanoes called the Chaîne des Puys.

- The telluric ground of the central hill contains two millennium of history, it is the place where everything started:

"It is here, with the black Cathedral spires, that one must look beyond the houses sloping down, to see the Puy de Dôme pushing up its bluish sky-line" (Henri Pourrat)
