Vercingétorix
Victor of the Gallic wars
(born in the Arverne region around 72 BC, he
died in Rome in 46 BC)
Gallic Chief from a noble family from
the Arverne region which united the Gauls when the Great Revolt
started in 52 BC, and defeated Caesar and his army near Clermont-Ferrand,
on the oppidum of Gergovie (supposedly). Vercingetorix is then arrested
by Caesar at Alesia and is led to Rome where he is killed after
6 years in captivity.
Vercingetorix inspired a number of
works of art, sculpted or painted, which are preserved in the Auvergne
capital.
